The Most Sensational Small Spaces Of 2020

Over the past few years, we’ve noticed a specific and unrelenting fascination with small spaces. From DIY-style ‘tiny homes’, to off-the-plan apartments, there exists an endless curiosity about these compact homes, and how clever design and styling can make them not just liveable, but genuinely lovable!

From a handbuilt cabin on the edge of a river, to a stylist’s pint-sized Sydney apartment – these are the most outstanding small spaces we visited over the past year. Squeeze in, there’s more room than you think!

A Designer’s ‘Curated Maximalist’ Apartment in Sydney

Many interior designers we know tend to err on the side of minimalism – not Jono Fleming! Since moving into his Waterloo apartment in 2015, this Sydney designer has been steadily creating an art and plant-filled haven reflective of his vibrant personality.

Jono’s apartment was newly built when he moved in, allowing him to place his own stamp on the interiors. He chose this building because it was designed by revered Australian design firm SJB, who had instilled a sense of history and character into the space.

Phillip Withers – The Design Files | Australia's most popular design blog.

Our Gardens column has become one of our most popular features, yet for some inexplicable reason, we rarely interview landscape designers. Major oversight!

Today, we chat to Phillip Withers, the passionate Creative Director of Richmond-based  Phillip Withers Landscape Design.

You can visit the Phillip’s garden installation ‘I See Wild’ at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, next week – March 29th – April 2nd 2017, Garden A76.
