When he’s not making ceramic vessels or abstract paintings, artist Enrique Tochez Anderson works part-time as a framer and mount-maker at the NGV and State Library of Victoria. His respect for art history, as well as artisanal craftsmanship stretches into every facet of his life.
From his backyard shed in Clifton Hill, Enrique works at his own multidisciplinary practice, inspired by everything from dub music to Mesoamerican craft. He considers his work as one artistic arc rather than two separate threads existing simultaneously. Instead, his mediums engage in a dialogue, constantly informing and extending the other.
Family businesses are few and far between in this day and age, so when we come across a good one – we shout it from the rooftops!
Abode Living was founded in 1991 by Robert Adair (whose family opened the famous haberdashery store by the same name on Chapel Street in the early 1900s!). Robert opened the first Abode store in Camberwell in 2000, which now contains the company’s production facilities and offices all in one building. Nearly everything is designed and developed here in Melbourne!
Robert’s son Ben and daughter-in-law Amelia joined the bedding and textile business in 2005 and have been there ever since, as have many of their staff. With local manufacturing and small business close to their hearts, this is a true legacy story!
Being the fan favourite on a cult television reality show (in arguably its best season ever!) was just the beginning of everything for Marion Grasby. After Masterchef, she started Marion’s Kitchen with her mum, Noi, to bring the family recipes from her childhood to local kitchens and dinner tables.
Eleven years and 8 million digital followers (!) later, Marion’s products are stocked in supermarkets and speciality grocers in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia (and direct-to-consumer in the US). She generally describes herself as a creator and founder, but these days her job encapsulates author, chef, publisher, food product developer, dishwasher, coffee-maker and soon-to-be homewares and lifestyle product developer!
This is a day in her tasty, colourful, super fun Noosa life.
