Today we bring you the second instalment of our new travel column! Our tour guide on this occasion is architect, designer and big-ideas person Sarah King.

You may have heard of ‘Sarah K’ in connection with  her sustainable design initiative Supercyclers, or perhaps The Other Hemisphere, which showcases Australian design at various international design events, including the Salone del Mobile in Milan and design weeks in London and Tokyo. Sarah K is a dynamic do-er, and is devoted to preserving and sharing beauty – be it natural or thoughtfully man-made!

Having lived all over Australia, Sarah is now based in Moss Vale, and has recently converted a workshop on her property into a charming weekender called closed(work)shop, furnished with a beautiful edit of Australian design pieces.

Today, Sarah introduces us to her top spots in the NSW Southern Highlands, just over one-and-a-half hours drive south-west of Sydney, with stop-offs at Fitzroy Falls, Moss Vale and Bowral.

Pippin Drysdale has been working as a ceramic artist for over 40 years, all of which she has spent fascinated with colour. Her bold, vivid porcelain vessels vary from plump, misshapen orbs to thin, wide-brimmed vases, emblazoned with a spectrum of hues found in the Australian landscape.

The onset of the pandemic marks the first time Pippin has been in one place for more than three months, allowing her time and space to shift her focus from the vast, sweeping desert plains of remote country, to the smallness and minutiae of the natural world.

We visited Pippin’s home studio in Fremantle to learn more about her unique practice. This is where the magic happens!

Water is an essential nutrient that makes your body run smoothly and efficiently. Because the average adult’s body is about 65% water, it’s no wonder that we can only survive for about three to five days without it! During long endurance workouts, drink water with carbohydrates and electrolytes to help maintain fluid balance and prevent post-exercise exhaustion.

From start to finish, water keeps your digestive system running smoothly. The saliva in your mouth contains water and digestive enzymes to break down your food. In your stomach, water balances the acidic environment to prevent ulcers, indigestion and heartburn. If you’re following a high-fiber diet, be extra diligent in drinking water, as fiber depends on it. Soluble fiber absorbs water to become a gel like mass that slows down the rate at which food leaves the stomach, and insoluble fiber traps and retains water to add bulk and moisture to your stool, which prevents constipation.

Liquid calories like juices and sodas don’t fill you up, and their high sugar content can cause insulin spikes that can set you up for a crash.
