A Thorough Overhaul Of A 1980s Brick Home In Suffolk Park

An 1980s brown brick home doesn’t necessarily jump out as an interior designer’s dream home… but Alex Bennett could see the potential in this Suffolk Park property.

With help from Those Architects, this home was gutted, reworked and extended to create the perfect beachside sanctuary for Alex and her two young children, Parker and Scout.

A Gentle Brutalist Masterpiece Wedged Into A Brisbane Mountain

Situated on a steep slope in the middle of an extreme bush fire zone, there is not much about this site that is easy. Yet somehow, Nielsen Jenkins have created an exceptional home here, one that is both sturdy and relaxing, elegant and intimate.

You might not realise how often you engage with landscape architecture. But take a stroll through a city park, public gallery, university or garden, and you’ll likely be in an environment that has been specifically designed to highlight the natural qualities of the place, and facilitate an enjoyable and functional experience.

The 2019 Victorian Landscape Architecture Awards celebrate how ‘beauty, sustainability, creativity, nature and wellbeing come together.’ The awards program covers 13 categories, from civic landscapes to parks, gardens and open spaces. The Jury Chair Mary Papaioannou highlighted ‘we saw the contribution that projects make through delivering a public realm that encourages recovery and rehabilitation, inclusivity and engagement.’

‘Landscape Architects ensure the complex relationship between people and nature is embedded through the many places that shape the way we live on this planet.’ added Adrian Gray, President of the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.

Take a scroll through the best of Victoria’s urban and rural environments, shaped by award-winning landscape architects!
