With the climate crisis ever more urgent, we made it our mission to cover more homes with sustainable design measures on The Design Files in 2020.
Partnering with Sukin and later Bank Australia, we brought you a new column featuring architect-designed homes with a minimum 7 star rating on the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS), as well as several other homes in the sustainable realm throughout the year.
If there’s one thing these homes show us, it’s that sustainable design doesn’t mean compromising on aesthetics. Not only are these homes designed with the planet’s future firmly in mind, they’re some of the most eye-catching properties we’ve had the pleasure of exploring this year.
Another tasty one-bowl meal idea today, this time inspired by everyone’s favourite meal – BREAKFAST.
This dish uses barley as it’s grain base. Admittedly, not the quickest ingredient to prepare (allow 40 minutes unless pre-cooked) but I LOVE it’s nutty texture. You could substitute rice or quinoa, or any other grain if you prefer.
To this we’ve pulled together a few of our favourite breakfast flavours – smoked salmon, avocado and sautéed mushrooms. Eggs with ‘the lot’ never looked so wholesome!
Like almost every major event scheduled for the year, the 2020 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show has been cancelled. It’s a devastating blow to the stallholders and designers involved – so much time, effort and resources are put into the show every year, with some concepts in development for more than 12 months prior.
Inevitably, our Instagram feeds were flooded with heartbroken retailers (including a particular post from Red Earth Bulb Farm and their entire flower crop) that wouldn’t be on display. In lieu of its cancellation, we reached out to some of the key exhibitors due to install their show gardens this week, to ask them what they had planned, what the show means to them, and who they were looking forward to seeing!
