This Terrazzo Artist's Cosmic Palace Is Out Of This World!

Actual gasps were sputtered from the collective TDF mouth when our Managing Editor stumbled across this multi-level, mezzanine gem while searching for homes to shoot in Sydney earlier this year. It was like finding buried treasure, and that was before we even saw it in the flesh!

This unbelievable home belongs to prolific public artist David Humphries, whose legendary career has seen him craft dazzling terrazzo art pieces in Australia, London and Los Angeles. With endless stories up his sleeve, and an outstanding artistic legacy, David’s home is one of Sydney’s best-kept secrets. Which really begs the question, why have we only JUST heard of David Humphries? An oversight we’re seeking to rectify today!

It’s my job to get excited about all beautiful Australian homes, but this house is spectacular on another level.

Roast Eggplant with Crunchy Coleslaw and Tahini Dressing – The Design Files | Australia's most popular design blog.

OK so this isn’t strictly a salad.  More of a substantial side dish really… but it’s one of my favourites, especially as the weather cools down – and so stupidly easy, I felt it was a nice way to conclude my Tasty Tuesday contribution this month!

I’ve been eating a lot of eggplant lately. When roasted with a generous splash of olive oil, its velvety texture just feels so decadent. There’s no other vegetable quite like it. And one of my FAVOURITE flavour combinations ever is eggplant and tahini. SO good.

However, eggplant does soak up olive oil like a sponge, making it quite a rich meal. That’s why it pairs so perfectly with this crunchy coleslaw – the tart, lemony tahini dressing cuts the grease in this dish, and balances out the richness of the eggplant.

This really is a satisfying meal in itself, but if you are keen to pair it with protein of some description, try roasting a small rack of lamb in the oven alongside the eggplant. So easy – it only takes 20 minutes.

A Restored 1930s Cottage In The Southern Highlands

The Southern Highlands home of James Watts and Tony Chapman is the kind of house many Australians wish they were isolating in right now.

With its gorgeous interiors, including sunny spots to read, antique furnishings, and a roaring fireplace, every day here feels like a boutique holiday stay.

James and Tony personally designed the renovation of the 1930s cottage, which was completed just before entering lockdown in 2020. With the help of a great local trades team, they’ve created the ultimate cosy sanctuary.

A Heritage Building Transformed Into A Boutique Hotel In Hobart

TravelA Heritage Building Transformed Into A Boutique Hotel In Hobart

Starting its life as a waterfront warehouse in the early-19th-century, the sandstone building that is now the site of Moss boutique hotel in the heart of Salamanca has lived many lives. ‘Its been a pub hotel, brothel, offices, and a nightclub, to name a few’, describes Ganche Chua of Circa Morris Nunn Architects, the firm entrusted with this significant project.

Carefully peeling away layers of the building’s more than 200-year history, the Circa Morris Nunn Architects team were able to ‘expose and restore the original building fabric’, allowing them to ‘tell the unique stories about a historic property that is impossible to replicate in a new building’.

Maintaining the integrity of the original structure was a key priority for the architects, who were committed to showing respect for the historical significance of the building, whilst imbuing it with modern flair. Many inherent qualities ‘were waiting to be discovered, restored, re-interpreted and transformed’ as Ganche and his team persevered with the challenging project.

No two rooms are alike at Moss, with design elements like light, textures, plants, views, and objects are painstakingly considered to ‘provide an evocative and experiential journey through the building’. The use of low lighting levels and dark surfaces, along with a selection of clean, crisp finishes for the new insertions strike a perfect balance between new and old.

Circa Morris Nunn Architects worked with a range of skilled local craftspeople, including furniture makers Matt Prince, Scott Van Tuil and Andrew Bull, to produce bespoke pieces for the space.

For Ganche and his team, it was ‘a privilege to work on a building with such history and potential’. Not knowing what they were going to find underneath the layers of the building’s past, each new discovery sparked new ideas and design intent. Embracing the challenging site and persevering with their vision allowed Circa Morris Nunn Architects to achieve an outcome that truly respects its origins, as the building moves into its next phase of life.
