A Secluded Alpine A-Frame In Kangaroo Valley

Sophie Lord and her partner (architect Ben Gray) bought this 16-acre plot of land in the middle of the Kangaroo Valley on a drizzly Monday morning three years ago completely on a whim. It had been on the market for two years and was overgrown with tall weeds, tumbledown sheds, rusty tractor parts and wild bamboo. There was no septic tank, power or water, but it was perfect.

In the years since purchasing the plot of land, they’ve crafted a beautiful piece of accommodation. The A-frame is made from recycled, natural or sustainably sourced materials – creating a sheltered, secluded nook in the middle of regional New South Wales that’s finally ready for visitors. Slice of heaven right there!

A Malaysian-Inspired Adaptable House In Brisbane

To really get a sense for the way his clients wanted to live, architect John Ellway travelled to Penang in 2017 shortly before beginning this project in inner-city Brisbane. His clients were born and raised on this small island off the north-west coast of Malaysia, and wanted to bring a similar style of living to their new home in Paddington.

Due to the nature of their shift work, and the need to host family visiting from overseas (sometimes for months at a time), it was essential that their new house was adaptable to a fluctuating number of occupants. As a result, John designed a house that expanded and contracted as necessary: parts could be closed off for sleep or relaxation during the day, and other parts activated when family members or friends arrived to stay.

Filled with light, air and views to the lush natural surrounds, this house breathes in and out, to calmly ensconce its inhabitants.

Fig Landscapes, The Plot

Fig Landscapes transformed this vacant cow paddock into a relaxed country garden filled with native plantings and raw, earthy materials that complement the surrounding landscape. A circular pool built into a long deck provides a focus on relaxation and enjoying the spectacular views.

The landscape designers were tasked with creating cohesion between the client’s newly transplanted Queenslander and its new surrounds – an absolute feat of their craft!
