Before + After: See A Victorian House Completely Restored After Fire

Just a few years ago, this Hawthorn, Victoria, home was nothing more than a rundown 1880s Victorian facade with four heavily fire-damaged rooms. The heritage-protected property was going to be a huge undertaking to restore, but Matt and Fiona Olaes were up to the challenge.

With the expertise of architects Robson Rak, builder Lane Project Management, and Ben Scott Garden Design, the original elements of this property have been reinstated alongside a light-filled, flowing extension.

The completed home is one of properties on show at the upcoming Open Houses 2022 hosted by St Joseph’s School Hawthorn.

An Artist’s Art Deco Apartment On Bondi Beach!

If you’ve ever been to Bondi Beach, you’ve likely looked up at the apartments directly opposite, and wondered  who lives there, and wakes up to *that* view every morning. Daimon Downey and Georgia Gorman are two of these lucky people, as the occupants of an apartment located above a restaurant and a surf shop. Does it get any more ‘Sydney’ than that?!

This apartment has been Daimon’s home for over 10 years, and the place you’ll often find him creating art while looking out at the expansive ocean views. The colour-filled space is a reflection of his current work, and to some extent, the chaos and energy of his former lives as a DJ, restaurateur and member of the iconic 2000s band Sneaky Sound System (!)

Coastal Pavilions, Freycinet Lodge

You might have noticed, if you follow us on Instagram, that I (Lucy!) recently spent a blissful weekend away on the East Coast of Tasmania, in Freycinet National Park.

I was incredibly lucky to stay at the Coastal Pavilions, Freycinet Lodge – a brand new development of nine architecturally designed private pavilions on the water’s edge, set amongst impossibly beautiful natural surroundings.

Today, I’m sharing a little tour of this very special new accommodation offering in the Apple Isle!

How To Start A Productive Garden TODAY!

GardensHow To Start A Productive Garden TODAY!

Now is a great time to be growing your produce before the chilly months set in. In fact, if you start planting your winter crop today, you could be greeted with delicious vegetables in as little as four weeks.

No idea where to start? We asked chef-turned sustainable-farmer Paul West, permaculture expert Ben Shaw, and TDF’s in-house gardening enthusiast Alice Ziebell for their beginner’s tips!

Paul West advises that you shouldn’t expect to be a pro straight away, and that rather the reward is in the process of growing (you and the plants!). Photo – Amelia Stanwix for The Design Files.
