Diet or Exercise: Which is Better for Weight Loss?

There’s this nasty rumor that exercise won’t help you lose weight. The more you work out, the more you’ll eat because, well, you need to rebuild those muscles you just broke down. And for some f

A Designer’s Richly Layered Rental Property!

The power of decoration is on full display in the gorgeous rented Melbourne home of Sarah Shinners, design manager at Simone Haag (you might recognise her from our Dream Job column!), and prosthetist Patrick Shinners.

When the couple moved into the Clifton Hill property in 2013, the interiors were covered in the one shade of beige. Fortunately, thanks to their flexible landlord, Sarah and Patrick were able to cosmetically transform the property, introducing new paint colours and curtains along the way.

Their home today is a warm, welcoming and layered space, dotted with art and objects created and collected over many years. Just goes to show – you don’t need to own your home, to make it your own!

A Melbourne Family Home That Feels Like A Warm Embrace

Renovating a family home is always a highly personal experience, but especially in the case of Rebecca and Tom Long.

Rebecca purchased this Clifton Hill house in 2015 with her husband, actor Tom Long. The pair undertook renovations over 2017-18 while Tom was being treated for multiple myeloma. Tragically, after a long battle, Tom passed away in January 2020.  This home, which holds his beloved family, is part of his legacy.

Alongside interior designer Kim Kneipp, the couple have created supremely comfortable oasis for their blended family. There’s a very literal, tactile softness in the textured walls, shaggy wool carpets and perfectly worn vintage furniture. A roaring fire in the living room captures a country house feeling, reflective of both Tom and Rebecca’s upbringings.

With its warm, comfortable and natural feel, Rebecca says the home feels like an embrace in times of bliss, and grief since Tom’s passing. Here, home is most certainly where the heart is.

Casa Warrandyte

This peaceful bush retreat in North Warrandyte was one of our MOST beloved homes when it was featured on The Design Files – and now you can shift gears from internet stalking the home to actually staying in it!

Designed by Alistair Knox in the 1970’s, the modernist property still features the rough-sewn dark timber the architect is renown for using, now illuminated with renovated skylights and a new Terrazzo tile floor. This mudbrick bush retreat is less than an hour from Melbourne, nestled amongst the birds, bush and river.
