A Melbourne Family Home That Feels Like A Warm Embrace

Renovating a family home is always a highly personal experience, but especially in the case of Rebecca and Tom Long.

Rebecca purchased this Clifton Hill house in 2015 with her husband, actor Tom Long. The pair undertook renovations over 2017-18 while Tom was being treated for multiple myeloma. Tragically, after a long battle, Tom passed away in January 2020.  This home, which holds his beloved family, is part of his legacy.

Alongside interior designer Kim Kneipp, the couple have created supremely comfortable oasis for their blended family. There’s a very literal, tactile softness in the textured walls, shaggy wool carpets and perfectly worn vintage furniture. A roaring fire in the living room captures a country house feeling, reflective of both Tom and Rebecca’s upbringings.

With its warm, comfortable and natural feel, Rebecca says the home feels like an embrace in times of bliss, and grief since Tom’s passing. Here, home is most certainly where the heart is.

How To Start A Productive Garden TODAY!

‘Think the world is ending? Grab a shovel, not a shopping trolley.’ That was the headline of  Adam Liaw’s recent Guardian op-ed that inspired the TDF office to spring into gardening action. (Clearly we weren’t the only ones, with multiple online seed stores reporting an overwhelming number of orders in recent days!)

If growing your own produce at home is new to you, we’ve compiled the following advice from those in the know to get you started. The one tip they all share? Start now – it’s easier than you think!

Prior Knowlege Travel

Waaaaay back in 2012, when this blog was but 18 months old, I interviewed Brisbane-born, US-based food and travel editor David Prior. He’s one of smartest people I’ve ever met.

Today we introduce David’s newest offering. Prior Knowledge Travel is a membership-based ‘travel society’ – a luxury service with a not-for-profit arm, focusing on truly unique travel experiences that highlight and preserve culture, rather than exploit it.

Celebrate the Humble Bean Because Today is Eat Beans Day!

July 3 is Eat Beans Day. To celebrate this bean-tastic day, why not try out one of these tasty alive recipes?

Beans, beans, the magical fruit, the more you eat the … better you feel! Okay, so it’s not exactly how the song goes, but we’ll spare you the immaturity. And anyway, it’s totally true: beans are a magical food, packed full of fibre and other nutrients to make you feel your absolute best. For these reasons, July 3 was named Eat Beans Day.

Beans, part of a larger group called pulses (which also include peas, lentils, and chickpeas), are filling, easy to prepare, and incredibly nutritious. Beans, as well as other pulse crops, are an excellent source of fibre, both soluble and insoluble, which can help lower blood cholesterol levels while also maintaining bowel health.

Plus, they’re low-glycemic index foods, which means they release sugar into the blood system slowly, an attribute beneficial to those needing to regulate their blood glucose levels. And they’re low in fat with no trans fat, and an excellent source of vegetarian protein.

Further, besides being healthy and nutritious, pulses are also beneficial in creating a healthy planet. They are nature’s sustainable food crop because they require low agricultural inputs such as energy or water.

To celebrate this bean-tastic day, why not try out one of these tasty alive recipes, featuring the small yet mighty bean?
