Banh Xeo · Vietnamese Crispy Pancake – The Design Files | Australia's most popular design blog.

The most excellent and most instagrammed new restaurant in Melbourne right now is Phamily Kitchen.  Serving up fresh and intensely flavoursome modern Vietnamese daily, this place is the business.  It’s run by Michael Pham, previously of ‘Tiny’ cafe in Collingwood… who, it seems, was always destined to return to his roots and open a restaurant inspired by his family’s heritage.

We are SO excited to welcome Michael to Tasty Tuesday this month! We’re kicking off with my absolute FAVE item on the Phamily Kitchen menu – Michael’s prawn and pork Banh Xeo, or vietnamese crispy pancake. SO DAMN GOOD.

Weaving Country + Culture With The New Textile Brand, Flash Minky

Flash Minky is a brand new textile brand on our radar, bringing the designs of eight Indigenous artists from the Eastern Kimberley region to limited-edition blankets.

Founded by non-Indigenous woman Emilia Galatis – an arts professional who has worked with Indigenous artists and arts centres in remote communities for the last 14 years – 100% of the net profits are redistributed to the artists.

The blankets create a new medium for these lauded artists’ practices to be shared and explored, as well as connecting them with a mainstream audience. We love them!

Cruden Farm · The Garden of Dame Elisabeth Murdoch – The Design Files | Australia's most popular design blog.

Cruden Farm at Langwarrin, south-east of Melbourne, was given to the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch in 1928 as a wedding present from her husband, Sir Keith Murdoch.

The exceptional story of this garden, created through the dedication of Dame Elisabeth and gardener Michael Morrison, is told through the pages of  Cruden Farm Garden Diaries. This beautiful book charts the evolution of a quiet, creative and incredibly productive relationship between two kindred souls.

Gardens columnist, Georgina Reid of The Planthunter, learns more from the book’s co-author, journalist Lisa Clausen.

Chocolate Almond Cake with Roasted Rhubarb – The Design Files | Australia's most popular design blog.

FOODChocolate Almond Cake with Roasted Rhubarb - The Design Files | Australia's most popular design blog.

This is one of my favourite cakes to make and is a real crowd pleaser. Once the chocolate has been melted, and the whites whipped, it is super easy too, and really takes no time at all. You can even use already ground almonds if you’re in a hurry.

I used to eat a similar cake when I lived in Italy. It was sold in thin slices and sat on a marble bench top in the window of the cutest little cake shop at the end of my street. I would often pick up a slice on my way home from school and eat it for breakfast with an espresso the following morning!

The richness and fudgy texture of this chocolate almond cake is simply dreamy, and paired with the fragrant rhubarb, things get even better. Try and buy the best dark chocolate you can afford – it makes all the difference and really is the hero of the cake. I use unsweetened cocoa powder to dust the cake, which should be done just before serving. Depending on what’s in season, you can exchange the rhubarb for fresh berries, poached pears, or even a citrus salad.
