Inside Mont Studio's Sustainably-Minded Textile Design Practice

Jarnah Montersino launched Mont Studio in 2020, after making the leap into the design industry, from her first career in human rights and international development. Although worlds apart, the career change was partially inspired by previous work travels, where she found herself collecting fabrics from around the world.

After struggling to find work with a textiles business that aligned with her personal ethos, Mont Studio was born! Jarnah’s Melbourne-based studio creates original fabrics and objects – her latest range of patterned linens and abstract wallpapers is available via textile showroom, Style Revolutionary.

Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting – The Design Files | Australia's most popular design blog.

Cassy Morris of Fig & Salt is back this afternoon with what can only be described as a SHOW STOPPER of a cake.

Cassy’s red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting must be seen to be believed. She makes hers super tall with copious amounts of icing, piling deep red fresh flowers on stop for visual effect.

Oh, and did you know red velvet cake is actually just an extra smooth and velvety chocolate cake with an obscene amount of red food colouring in it!? True story. I know two whole bottles of colouring seems excessive but go with it… Cassy assures us this is the only way to achieve that distinctive rich deep red colour.

This Spectacularly Beautiful Island Getaway Is Tasmania's Best Kept Secret

You might have noticed, if you follow us on Instagram, that I (Lucy) have been racing around all over the place recently – Sydney! Gippsland! Philip Island! However, one of the most memorable destinations I’ve had the great fortune to visit recently has been Flinders Island, a spectacularly beautiful island just off the North East Coast of Tasmania.

Along with my family, I was lucky to stay at Wombat Lodge, a cozy three bedroom farm stay property, located on a working cattle farm in rugged, beautiful Killiecrankie, towards the top end of the island. We spent a weekend exploring this truly remarkable part of Australia (that despite its remoteness, is only a one hour flight from Melbourne) and I’m happy report that all three of us came away totally smitten!

At Stay At Mitchelton Hotel, Nagambie (+ Giveaway!)

I was incredibly lucky last month to escape Melbourne for a blissful weekend, to stay at Victoria’s newest boutique accommodation offering.

Today, I’m sharing a tour of the remarkable Mitchelton estate in Central Victoria, which comprises a Hecker Guthrie designed hotel and pool, day spa, The Muse restaurant overlooking the Goulburn River, winery cellar door, and the largest indigenous art gallery in regional Victoria.

You can also WIN a stay yourself – scroll down to enter!

A New Zealand Villa Built For Hosting

So often, good architecture is assessed on the successful connection it establishes between building and place. A less frequently mentioned criteria is its capacity to engage people with each other.

The clients of this home in Auckland, New Zealand are a pair of hospitality professionals, and were very vocal about their desire for a hospitality-focussed home design! Multiple gathering zones, a generous kitchen and a pétanque green were requirements, and architecture firm Maud delivered!

Podcasting, Politics + Pop Culture, With Journalist Osman Faruqi

There are few people on the internet whose musings make you vigorously mutter ‘Yes!’ under your breath to the chagrin of your fellow commuters. Journalist, podcast host, audio producer and self-proclaimed ‘bearded Muslim man who has opinions’, Osman Faruqi, is one of those rare people.

As the head of audio at independent publisher Schwartz Media, Osman oversees production for the enormously successful 7am (which has become the most popular daily news podcast in the country since its launch in 2019) and will now host the newest addition to the masthead’s stable – a weekly podcast covering TV, film, music, art and literature called The Culture.

That’s a long way from spending a summer making spreadsheets for a construction firm while studying environmental engineering, and doing volunteer stints on Sydney’s community radio on the side.

But that’s the thing about dream jobs, often they’re not at all where you expected to find yourself.

Utility Meets Luxury In These Tiny Tasmanian Shacks

What is the collective noun for shacks? For this Denison Rivulet project by Taylor + Hinds architects, the three cabins might be described as a ‘shelter.’ (Or, perhaps, a ‘glow’, looking at that bathroom!).

Inspired by the practical minimalism of Tasmanian shack heritage, this project on the East Coast of Tasmania is about ‘more than capturing a view.’
